The LDES Council is a global organization, with founding members and a Board made up of executives and business leaders from leading energy companies, technology providers, investors, and end-users. The Council strives to accelerate decarbonization of the energy system by driving innovation, commercialization, and deployment of long duration energy storage.

Launched at COP26 in November 2021, the LDES Council is rapidly growing and has established itself as a catalyst in driving global dialogues on long duration storage by providing fact-based guidance and information drawn from members’ expertise. The Council is hiring a Director of Operations to develop and implement the Council’s global strategy and oversee day-to-day operations, running the internal machine of the Council. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

A successful candidate will have over 10 years of operations and leadership experience, that includes project management, analytics and strategic planning. The candidate should possess a very detailed mindset with a successful track record in identifying, conceptualizing, evaluating, and launching strategic solutions for internal programs.

Essential Functions

The essential job functions for this position include, but are not limited to:

Provide leadership oversight and administrative direction to areas of operations, finance, payroll, legal contracts, human resources, and information technology.


  • Manage the Council’s operational budgets.
  • Manage and be responsible for accounts receivable.
  • Develop, monitor, measure, and track Council budget (in Euros and USD), with added metrics of success and recommendations for aligning budget and spending.
  • Develop and execute Council’s financial management strategy and have direct responsibility for accounting, finance, forecasting/budgeting, strategic planning, contract negotiations, banking relationships, partnerships compliance, revenue, and private and institutional financing.
  • Provide recommendations utilizing forward-looking predictive models and activity-based financial analysis.
  • Prepare financial information and provide regular reports on Council budget.


  • Seek and deliver continuous improvement of operational processes (including simplification and documentation of these processes) to drive a high-performance organization.
  • Implement policies and procedures that will improve day-to-day operations.
  • Direct the development of operational standards, procedures and controls to promote effective information flow for all financial and administrative areas of responsibility.
  • Translate strategies into defined tactics, programs/projects, priorities, and timelines to turn strategy into reality.
  • Develop streamlined processes as the Council membership continues to grow.
  • Develop resource, risk, quality, cost, and scope management plans for various Council programs and initiatives.
  • Establish quantitative and qualitative metrics, guidelines, and standards by which the Council’s efficiency and effectiveness can be evaluated; identify opportunities for improvement.

Stakeholder management:

  • Negotiate with suppliers and manage relationships with external vendors, including managing Accounts Payables.
  • Manage external legal team.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on Board and Board Committee relations to include scheduling, presentation development, and follow-up activities.

  • Other:

  • Remain current on changes within the legal, regulatory, economic and technology environments, which may affect the financial and administrative operations of the organization – both in Europe and the United States.

  • Qualifications

    Required skills and abilities to effectively perform this position include, but are not limited to:

    • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business administration, business management, communication management, marketing, business development and or related degree.
    • At least 10 years of experience in an operations role with management-level experience.
    • At least 5 years of experience in the energy industry. Some understanding of the energy industry to include generation, electric utilities, electrification, grid modernization, supply and distribution landscape. This includes knowledge of relevant policies, programs, technologies, and initiatives. Familiarity with energy storage, energy management, renewable energy, smart grids, global decarbonization goals and sustainable development is preferred. Understanding of the global landscape on the above shall be preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to interact with executive-level stakeholders, including Council leadership, board, Council members, and relevant third parties and partners.
    • Demonstrated the ability to get things done with external organizations, particularly if they have done it in a new organization.
    • Experience developing program staff and consultants.
    • Experience working in a global, multi-cultural organization.
    • Experienced in SAP and other onboarding and invoicing programs.
    • Fast-paced, start-up mentality.
    • Strong budgeting and accounting experience.
    • Ability to recommend and implement programs to streamline the organization (i.e. task management, budget management, travel coordination, etc.) 
    • Understand process for grant applications, etc.
    • Strong experience with Google Suite, Powerpoint/Google Slides, Adobe PDF, Excel/Google Sheets, and Word/Google Docs as well as data management software.

    Salary Range

    €100-€150k depending on experience.
