Pumped Hydropower Meets the Long Duration Energy Storage Wave

Long duration energy storage (LDES) is at the epicenter of the clean energy transformation providing essential flexibility, grid reliability and resiliency. With aggressive decarbonization goals around the world, there are many challenges and barriers to the accelerated deployment of LDES. While hydropower has long been used to generate electricity, there are even more instances where a portfolio of long duration technologies including pumped storage hydropower can impact the clean energy revolution. In the U.S. alone, pumped storage hydropower accounts for 93% of all large-scale energy storage. There is significant potential for scaling up global pumped hydro capacity and to take advantage of the world’s water resources. Attendees will learn from global experts how to harness the power of water to bring more renewable resources to the grid and gain an understanding of the real-world, global impact of LDES toward decarbonization and a net-zero future.

  • Stephen Crosher, CEO, RheEnergise

    9:45 AM - 10:25 AM
In one “short duration”, get a brief overview of the various types of long duration energy storage technologies available, and how we move beyond lithium ion batteries. From compressed air energy storage to flow batteries to hydro storage, get a view of the landscape during these lightning round sessions.

Presenting: Breeze (Denis Wiart), Corre Energy (Chet Lyons) , EnergyVault (Craig Horne), Eos (Francis Richey), Form Energy (Marco Ferrara), Hydrostor (Jon Norman), Invinity (Larry Zulch), Malta (Luke Rose), Redflow (Mark Higgins), RheEnergise (Stephen Crosher), Rye Development (Michael Rooney)

Roundtable on Commercialization and Path to Net Zero
    10:25 AM - 12:15 PM (Includes 15 min. Break)

In this moderated roundtable, all attendees will benefit from hearing energy storage experts on the path to commercialization, how to ensure LDES is deployed at scale, what’s needed from the financing side and the technology side, and tips on finding the right partner. Global case studies will be presented as success stories of LDES installations.

Speakers: Reta Jo Lewis, President and Chair, Export-Import Bank of the United States; Sue Babinec, Argonne National Lab; Jim Cabot, Breakthrough Energy; David Havard, GE; Chong Song, World Bank; Julia Souder, LDES Council (Moderator)

    Policy Discussion
    12:15 PM - 12:45 PM
Join this discussion to learn what changes companies would like to see from policymakers to support the acceleration of LDES, and hear what is working and what is not. Get insight into how the private sector can lead and the public sector can enable the growth of LDES through regulations, policies, and more.

Speakers: Jon Norman, Hydrostor; Nidhi Thakar, Form Energy; Larry Zulch, Invinity; Luke Rose, Malta (Moderator)

Long Duration Storage, the Grid, and Energy Supply

    12:45 PM - 1:25 PM
The final discussion explores how LDES fits or should fit into resource planning and grid and supply challenges. Panelists will discuss storage as transmission and how long duration energy storage enables a clean energy transition and additional reliability and flexibility for our grid.

Speakers: William Mao, EoS; Gabe Murtaugh, CAISO; Chris Shelton, AES; Michael Pesin, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Advanced Grid R&D, Office of Electricity (Moderator, Invited)
