The LDES Council is a global organization, with founding members and a Board made up of executives and business leaders from leading energy companies, technology providers, investors, and end-users. The LDES Council strives to accelerate decarbonization of the energy system by driving innovation, commercialization, and deployment of long duration energy storage.

Launched at COP26 in November 2021, the LDES Council is rapidly growing and has established itself as a catalyst in driving global dialogues on long duration storage by providing fact-based guidance and information drawn from members’ expertise.

The Council is hiring a Director of Policy, Markets, & Strategic Partnerships to develop and implement the LDES Council’s global policy, market development, and strategic partnerships. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

A successful candidate will have over 10 years of policy/markets and leadership experience, that includes project management as related to policy work, legislative/regulatory experience, analytics and strategic planning. The candidate should possess a very detailed mindset with a successful track record in managing strategic relationships, understanding of policy and regulatory functions and processes (E.U. and U.K. focused to begin), and knowledge of upcoming market development, specifically in the energy, sustainability, and climate industries.

The position will require some international travel. The position requires the ability to work some non-traditional and extended hours to support a global workforce in multiple time zones.

Essential Functions

The essential job functions for this position include, but are not limited to:

Provide leadership oversight and administrative direction to areas of policy, market development, and strategic partnerships. Lead the team in the development of resources, including guiding principles, primers, white papers, guidance documents, policy principles, and frameworks, as well as thought leadership pieces as informed by LDES Council members and industry experts.

POLICY

  • Develop talking points and strategize on messaging around energy issues and policy. Collaborate across various company departments including research, communications, and executive leadership.
  • Work directly with the VP of Communications and PR agency to provide insight and coordinate internal and external messages to educate stakeholders.
  • Coordinate meetings among and between elected officials, NGOs, and LDES Council to educate around LDES as part of energy policy.
  • Regularly evaluate policy and regulatory environment as related to LDES, single out top priority concerns. Summarize and offer recommendations on how best to mitigate for various stakeholders (the executive team, LDES Council members, partners, board of directors, general public.).
  • Leverage and create professional relationships across countries, personalities, and the political spectrum to achieve a positive impact.

MARKETS

  • Establish a ‘voice’ in the clean energy sector.
  • Liaise with utilities or energy regulators. Lead policy engagements to influence national market environments.
  • Maintain extensive practical familiarity with energy, investment, and corporate regulations across E.U. and U.K. to readily advise relevant team members, partners, etc.
  • Summarize impacts of new and existing regulations to current projects, then plan and manage rollout of any activities required to align with these standards as supportive of LDES.

PARTNERSHIPS

  • Work with the CEO to build and strengthen existing and new partner networks and strategic partnerships.
  • Manage relationships with international organizations that the LDES Council already partners with including energy storage associations, international energy associations, and other NGO groups committed to advancing the clean energy agenda and supporting LDES.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to develop strategies to identify opportunities for greater engagement through external partnerships.
  • Work with trade associations, coalitions, and outside consultants as well as an internal team of professionals.
  • Manage relationships with partners in order to ensure that they are satisfied with the results of their collaboration.

Qualifications

Required skills and abilities to effectively perform this position include, but are not limited to:

  • A seasoned policy expert, with at least 10 years of work experience at a leading multinational professional services firm, policy research, consulting institution, or infrastructure firm.
  • At least 7 years of experience in the energy industry. Some understanding of the energy industry to include generation, electric utilities, electrification, grid modernization, supply and distribution landscape. This includes knowledge of relevant policies, programs, technologies, and initiatives. Familiarity with energy storage, markets, energy management, renewable energy, smart grids, global decarbonization goals, and sustainable development is preferred. Understanding of the global landscape on the above shall be preferred.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in public policy, public administration, political science, and/or related degree.
  • Proven experience crafting talking points and messages around energy issues and policy
  • Experience working with legislators, regulators, stakeholders and industry advocacy groups.
  • Established network in the energy sector, including in E.U. and U.K. markets.
  • Experience with policy advocacy related to energy storage, solar and interconnection is desired, but not required.
  • Comfortable in working in complex, and highly political environments, when needed.
  • Politically savvy; passionate about understanding the unique machinery of government in different countries, and understands that there is no one-size-fits-all policy solution.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with executive-level stakeholders, including LDES Council leadership, board, LDES Council members, and relevant third parties and partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex problems and develop insightful analyses using quantitative and quantitative approaches.
  • Experience developing program staff and consultants.
  • Experience working in a global, multi-cultural organization.
  • Fast-paced, start-up mentality.
  • Strong experience with Google Suite, Powerpoint/Google Slides, Adobe PDF, Excel/Google Sheets, and Word/Google Docs as well as data management software (i.e. Hubspot).

Location

This position is remote, but preferred candidates will reside in the European Union or United Kingdom.

Salary Range

€100-€150k depending on experience.
