The Electric Thermal Energy Storage (eTES): A Strategic System Asset for Australia’s Energy Transition policy paper outlines how eTES can support Australia’s energy transition as renewable generation expands, coal generation retires and electricity demand grows. By converting electricity into stored thermal energy, eTES can provide reliable industrial heat while shifting electricity use to times when renewable generation is abundant, prices are lower or network capacity is available. The paper highlights how this flexibility can reduce renewable curtailment, improve the use of existing grid infrastructure and lower emissions from industrial heat. It also sets out policy and market reforms to recognise these wider system benefits and support the deployment of eTES at scale.
