At the UN’s upcoming 28th annual climate change conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from November 30-December 12, 2023 expanding renewable energy will take center stage. Long duration energy storage is the foundation on which our renewable future will be built. As part of the Global Renewables Alliance the LDES Council is committed to ensuring that nations will honor and expand on their commitments to tripling renewable energy development and making energy storage the cornerstone of that effort.
LDES Council messaging at COP28
- Long duration energy storage (LDES) is the most effective pathway to achieve complete decarbonization, triple renewable energy development, and de-risk the energy transition.
- Governments must put the correct funding mechanisms and policy support in place today to deliver LDES at scale and pace.
- Building new renewable-and-storage based energy systems provides us with a huge opportunity to create a healthy, just and equitable future for communities around the world.
The ignored crisis within the crisis: the need for pumped storage and hydro
Alongside the International Hydropower Association the LDES Council is discussing the power and promise of current and next-generation pumped hydro energy storage technologies as a critical piece of the energy transition.GRA Pavilion (Blue Zone)
The critical role of long duration energy storage in the energy transition: now is the time for action
This event at the Global Renewables Hub will showcase set out why long duration energy storage (LDES) is increasingly recognised as an essential component of global decarbonisation. By 2040 8 TW of LDES could save the global economy over USD 500 billion annually, with multiple gigatonnes of avoided carbon emissions.GRA Pavilion (Blue Zone)

The journey towards, and benefits of, hourly matched renewable energy (24/7 CFE)
Hourly matched renewable energy, also known as 24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity (CFE), is a new approach to renewable energy procurement that offers a number of potential benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, greater grid reliability, lower energy costs, and enhanced corporate sustainability. However, the journey towards 24/7 CFE is still in its early stages, and there are a number of challenges that need to be addressed.GRA Pavilion (Blue Zone)
